Masc Malli (an abbreviation of masculinity and jasmine flower in the Tamizh language) acknowledges the pluralities, spaces, and differences among men and masculinities. To speak about gender relations and unpack direct, lived experiences, the performance lecture sets from the perspective of the feminine gaze. Looking beyond the prescribed set of ideas that have surrounded traditional and heteronormative masculinity, and honour the manifold layers of masculinities, Masc Malli takes on the narrative of reclaiming and reimagining brown masculinities within the Tamizh community in a broader, contemporary discourse. Using a collection of found imagery, personal documentation, and spoken word, the performance recounts, overlaps and negates these narratives as vulnerable, open windows on the screen.
